How to Use This Calculator

The Fast Mental-Math Method
For a 20% tip, drop the last digit of the bill (that's 10%), then double it. On a $58 bill: drop the 8 to get $5.80, double it to $11.60. For 15%, work out 10% the same way and add half of that on top. For 18%, work out 20% and subtract a small amount. It's a useful shortcut for a quick estimate at the table, even though the calculator above will always be exact.
The Formulas, With Worked Examples
Tip by percentage:Tip = Bill × (Percentage ÷ 100)
Example: a $50 bill at 20% is $50 × 0.20 = $10 tip, for a $60 total.
Splitting the total among a group:Per Person = (Bill + Tax + Tip) ÷ Number of People
Example: a $120 bill with an $21.60 tip (18%), split 4 ways, is $141.60 ÷ 4 = $35.40 per person.
Tip on Pre-Tax or Post-Tax? Why It's Worth Checking
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the slightly more traditional guidance, since sales tax isn't part of the service you're tipping for. In practice, though, tipping on the full post-tax total is common too, partly because it's simpler to work from the one final number printed on a receipt. Neither is wrong \u2014 the difference is usually small \u2014 but it's worth knowing which one you're doing, which is why the toggle above lets you pick either.

How do you calculate a tip?
